Obtaining an internship or job while in college can be difficult. I know it has certainly not been an easy search for me. I currently work two jobs that are not in any way related to my major, so my goal this semester is to find a summer internship that has something to do with my major, Marketing. My ideal job would be working with a public relations manager so I can get a feel for what the job would be like.
This BUS 2001 class has been invaluable in my search. Thought this class I have been exposed to a variety of resources that I am using to gain information about potential jobs. Some of these are LinkedIn, Golden OpporTUnities, the different employer events held on campus, job fairs and the Business Career Center. Each of these resources has its specific advantage. Linked In and Golden OpporTUnities are sites where employers can view my information and where I can also view information about the companies that are hiring. The employer events of campus and job fairs are where I can meet recruiters and connect with them face to face. It is a huge plus for an interviewer to recognize a job candidate from an earlier positive encounter. The Business Career Center is the most diverse resource that I have found to help with preparation for job searches. The best they have to offer students, in my opinion are the mock interviews and resume reviews that they are able to provide. These practice sessions help so much in preparing for an actual interview.
This semester, I have grown my network substantially. Every time I meet a new person from one of the networking events on campus, I connect with them on LinkedIn. This helps them to remember me after the event when they see my face appear on their computer screen and raises the probability of them remembering me next time we encounter one another.
In all, the BUS 2001 class has greatly improved the effectiveness of my internship search and I am confident that I will land the perfect opportunity soon. I plan to attend a mock interview next week conducted by actual employers, so wish me luck!
