CliftonStrengths Signature Themes Action Items

Now that I’ve thought about my CliftonStrengths Signature Themes and understand some of what they imply about the kind of person I am, it’s time I do something with this information. In the CliftonStrengths Signature Themes book, there are action items after each theme’s description. These were extremely helpful in guiding me on my journey to maximize my strengths and avoid the blindspots that go with each theme. Below is a summary of the things I am working on changing so that I can capitalize on the talents I already have.

The CliftonStrengths Signature Themes book states that people with a strong deliberative theme should partner with others who have strong command, assurance, or activator themes. These themes help to speed up the decision-making process while still allowing for the time required to weigh the pros and cons. This tells me I need to look for these kinds of people to connect with in my personal and professional life. The book also states that people with a strong deliberative theme are good at making sound business deals. This indicates to me that I need to capitalize on this theme during my time here in the business college and really work at learning how to make good business decisions. I also need to devise a concise way to explain to future employers that while I like to think a lot about decisions before committing, it’s not because I’m afraid to commit. Rather it’s that I want to know as much as possible about the risks involved in order to mitigate them and make a sound decision.

The book states that people with the input theme should concentrate on acquiring a job that requires them to acquire new information daily. I love research and teaching (I have an education minor already completed) so this rang true for me. I need to set aside time each day to read books and articles that stimulate me. I also must develop a reliable system for storing all the random information I find. I already have a lot of articles and informational finds stored on google drive, but I need to sort them out into separate folders so I can access the information more easily. The book gives further advice about seeking out friends and colleagues with focus and discipline themes. These people will help me stay on track so I can concentrate on the specific task at hand.

To capitalize on my intellection strength, I need to schedule time each day for thinking. I will use this time to think about anything I want and to develop ideas. I also need to write out my ideas more than I already do. I have a weekly journal that I write in, but I’m going to begin writing daily, as thoughts and ideas tend to slip away if they are not jotted down quickly. I certainly need to build my network by making connections with people who think and share their wonderful ideas. I also need to communicate more to those with whom I am close and explain to them why I need time to think. Sometime people can't understand why I must have time to myself, but I need to explain that it’s productive and necessary for me to develop my own ideas about things.

Since I have a strong analytical bent, the book says I need to choose a career that involves finding patterns, analyzing or organizing data. Marketing research, which is the degree I’m working toward is one of the suggested careers. This tells me I’m on the right track in finding a career that fits my personality and strengths. What I need to do is to connect with people who specialize in marketing and share ideas with them. The book suggests that fro projects, I should partner with someone who has the activator strength to move quickly and efficiently through the analytical phase on to action. I should also listen to strategic, belief and empathy themes as they have valuable insights that will help me excel in my career.

As a learner, I should “go into a field that is constantly changing”. If global markets can be described as anything, it’s constant change. I enjoy learning new things every day, so waking up and applying new skills to new problems such as marketing in a global economy is just the challenge that I’d love. I also enjoy learning new languages. I speak fluent Spanish, but I want to begin learning French. I know that now is the best time to start.

In all, the CliftonStrengths Signature Themes results I got have explained to me so much about myself and the way I function. I have acquired a roadmap that I can use for constant improvement of my strengths. I also now know what kinds of people to surround myself with in order to compensate for the blindspots that may hinder my progress otherwise.

Please take this assessment if you haven’t already. I promise you’ll learn a lot about yourself and gain understanding on how to be the best you can be.
Thank you for reading! Please feel free to comment and share.

CliftonStrengths for Students Assessment--Results and Interview

The CliftonStrengths results I received seem very accurate. They provide invaluable insight into why I prefer certain activities above others. I'm even using them to refine my study habits based on the things I have learned about myself.  My number one theme was deliberative. This was fitting because I like to look at all sides of an issue before I come up with a solution. I carefully weigh the costs and benefits before committing to one plan or another. I don't enjoy surprises, even good ones, since I work best when I have time to think about situations before diving into them. My second theme, input, is an interesting one. I always wanted to be a librarian when I was younger. This makes sense considering that the input theme has to do with collecting and archiving things. These days I collect my favorite books and have a thriving Pinterest account (it's basically online hoarding therapy). Intellection was my third theme. I think this one goes along with be...

BUS 2001 Mock Interview Sessions

This week in our BUS 2001 class we practiced giving interviews and being interviewed. In the first part of the week, we discussed the different types of interviews. We were informed that behavior-based interviews are the norm in business and that we should prepare accordingly. Having already discussed resume tips and other  brand-building tips, we were prepared to implement what we had learned in an actual (practice) interview. We had been instructed on what to wear and how to present ourselves, so most of the class showed up in suits which is the appropriate attire for an interview. I wore a black suit jacket and skirt with a black and whit e undershirt and black low-heeled pumps. The outfit was appropriate, fit well and looked professional.  When the students arrived to class on the day of our mock-interview, we were paired up at random and given a list of interview questions. We then took turns with our partner being inte...
Hello all, I’m sad to announce that this is the final blog post in the BUS 2001 series. It has been fun reflecting each week about what I’ve done and the things I’ve learned in this class. At the beginning of the course, I had certain expectations, and I can truthfully say that this course has exceeded those expectations. I wanted to learn more about the career resources offered here at TU and how to apply them to my job search. Through this class, I’ve been given a huge amount of resources to help me with developing my personal brand and furthering my career; certainly more resources than I could have wished for. I was also really excited at the beginning to explore my strengths and pinpoint my blindspots. We focused on these a lot in the first half of the course. Finding out how I function and relate to others was a hugely important part of the course. I will use the insight this course gave me from now on in my career and even in my personal relationships. I was also looking fo...
